Recently I drove to a gorgeous little cottage in the woods near the Poconos with some friends for the weekend. It was just what I needed to help me wind down from the excitement of Fashion Week and settle into fall. Engulfed in the serene silence of the forest, we all gathered in the kitchen to laugh and chat over glasses of wine and seasonal beers. Warmed by the heat of the oven, which held the homemade pizzas we had just assembled, thoughts and worries of the city melted away.

Lucky for us, the weekend we were there happened to also be the one that the county fair was in town! The Bloomsburg Fair which encompasses 227 acres was like 10 of my beloved street fairs in New York. Rows and rows of tents advertised every autumn comfort food you could imagine. I took it all in as I sipped my warm apple cider and munched on a peach dumpling with homemade cinnamon ice cream.

A chill in the air is a perfect excuse for you to snuggle up next to your sweetheart on your favorite fair ride!

Driving back to the city I felt so centered and prepared to tackle my chaotic schedule. Take a break from being superwoman this season and give yourself some time to enjoy it. Bring Jia Collection with you and spend more time with loved ones and less with your luggage!

I am back in the U.S. and summer is winding down but I want to get some more relaxing in before I go back to NYC. This time I took a trip to Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Much different from the beaches I explored in Grenada, the water is much colder but it is just a beautiful. Old Orchard Beach is a great destination for family vacations. With games, rides, and a variety of  sweet treats on the boardwalk for kids and, bars, an assortment of delectable seafood, and shops oozing with New England charm for adults, it is a choice that everyone can agree on!

I had been browsing Jia Collection since I came across it on Facebook earlier this summer.

At the time, I was looking for something unique and chic that would be distinct but easy to wear. When I realized Jia Collection was versatile and could be worn in multiple ways, my design and traveller sensibilities got the best of me. I had to have a piece.

At first, I wondered if the fabric and the cut would suit my curvier body type. I’m 5’2 with an hourglass figure that doesn’t always lend itself to easy online purchases. I typically need to feel the fabric, try it on, and ensure it flatters in all the right places. But, when I saw the return policy on this e-store I realized I had nothing to loose and made my first purchase.

When my package arrived, I was blown away. Not only did the Alberta dress fit my curves like a glove, but all the small and unexpected details in the packaging made me feel extra satisfied with my choice.

It’s rare with online shopping that designers take the time to appreciate their individual customers. That’s why I was flattered to receive a personalized card from the designer herself, a pink tissue paper-wrapped product, and best of all a size label that was easily removable with a rounded safety pin.

One of my biggest pet peeves is having to cut off all the tags on my new clothes, like taking a sticker off of a fruit. So this small but thoughtful consideration on Jia’s part left me feeling like she really cared about both what she does and about her customer’s experience. So, I couldn’t resist but write her and thank her for her experience.

I’m really excited for her next collection next month, and look forward to bringing her pieces to Europe with me this fall. I highly recommend Jia Collection to discerning women looking for special one-of-a-kind, chic and versatile pieces.

Like many New Yorkers, this summer I decided to escape the sweltering city heat. I took refuge in Mamma Cannes, Grenada and brought Jia Collection with me!

When announcing my travel plans to friends they often replied, “You mean the city in Spain?”, not many had heard of the tiny country in the Caribbean with the same name. Grenada is composed of three islands that measure 133 sq. miles in total with a population of only 108,132 (the population of Manhattan is 1,601,948). Narrow roads wind along the mountainous terrain of the island while lush vegetation, livestock, and the occasional house whiz by. Largely untouched by commercialization, it is a true island paradise.

The trees are laden with almost any kind of fruit you can think of. Every path we wandered down we were flanked by mangoes, starfruit, bananas, plantains, coconuts, guavas, papayas, passion fruit, cocoa beans, limes, and some I had never even seen before. Whenever we got hungry while exploring, there was usually a tasty treat in arm’s reach for us to snack on. In the mornings I roll out of bed and am greeted by a pile of fresh produce from the yard. I am bewildered by the fact that such copiousness is right outside when I remember seeing these same fruits in supermarkets in NYC beneath exorbitant price tags.

I also was lucky enough to be in Grenada during Carnival and got to check out the celebrations.

After her big win, we spoke to Lacey to get some tips from this authority on infusing style into our busy lives.

Tell us about your winning looks. What made you chose the pieces you used to accessorize?

My four winning looks were for day and night. I tried to focus on really showing the flexibility of this awesome Jia piece by dressing it for 9-5 and cocktail hour.

How would you describe your style and how do Jia’s designs fit with your aesthetic?

I typically describe my style as feminine, classic and glamor. Jia fits perfectly into that because I can take it from a classic 9 to 5 look right to a glamorous look to wear to an event at night.

I could never live without my Clarisonic. Absolute game-changer for my daily beauty routine.

If you could pick one ultimate style secret to share with your fans, what would it be?

It isn’t about the size of the piece you are wearing it is about how that piece fits. The moment you step away from worrying about going from a 4 to a 6 and realizing that that 6 is what flatters you more and in fact makes you look smaller, you will be happier with the way you look in the mirror.

We personally couldn’t agree with this more! It is always more flattering when women embrace their shape and dress for their size.

And of course I have to ask, what are you going to buy with your contest winnings?

That is a tough question… I am heading to NYFW in a month so I am on the hunt for pieces that will compliment my week in the big apple.

Founder & Creative Director, Angel Naula

We took a trip to Williamsburg to the Naula showroom to get you the inside scoop on their chic furniture designs. Once there, we were graciously given a tour of the showroom. Even though it was still in the process of being renovated in preparation for their grand opening on August 15th, it was still stunning.

In business since 2002, Naula’s talent has not gone unnoticed, completing residential projects for high-profile clients such as  Robert Kennedy Jr., Lenny Kravitz, Hugh Jackman, Norah Jones, and Rupert Murdoch. His designs have also been featured in such distinguished venues as Esquire SoHo, Pulse Contemporary Art, Maison de Luxe Beverly Hills, and the Hampton Designer Showhouse.

The modern furniture was smartly styled with rustic accessories like animal hides which recalled the designer’s Ecuadorian roots. Angel’s love for designing and fabricating furniture comes from his family, which has been passing down this knowledge for generations. Because of his background he also has a strong sense of community. Always looking to support  other artists in his Brooklyn neighborhood, he displays work from local artists in his showroom as well.

When asked what inspires his sleek designs, Angel replied:

“Yeah, it’s my family that’s an inspiration. It’s like, I’ve been doing this my whole life and I love working with design. I love to create things and that’s what I do. There are a couple of inspirations here and there, like for example when I go on trips.”

I also I got a tour of the workshops where all of Naula’s designs are created, which are located right upstairs so that Angel can keep a watchful eye to ensure his high standards of quality.

Since most of Naula’s business is custom design and reupholstering, he has a special room set aside for photographing his work so that he can show his progress to his clients.

“They get very excited, They can’t wait to see how their furniture will turn out!”

Angel also has environment friendly options, offering water-based lacquers, non-toxic foam, and upholstery in eco-friendly fabrics. Always focused on accommodating his customers, he will work with them to suit his designs to their needs. You can walk into his showroom and pick out any design you like and he will re-imagine it for you.

“We can create the same design and just convert it to make it eco-friendly.”

It was a pleasure for us to sit down and chat with such a warm a soul, devoid of pretension. As soon as he spoke we could feel the deep passion that he has for his work, and it shows in his impeccable craftsmanship. After having our ELENA pullover featured in Fitness Magazine, it got us thinking as to how we can help our customers stay healthy!

It is a proven fact that America is the most overworked country in the world, working the longest hours, and having the least leisure time. Obviously this can lead to an enormous amount of stress. According to WebMD, “Stress can play a part in problems such as headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression, and anxiety”. Also we discovered the shocking statistic that “Seventy-five percent to 90% of all doctor’s office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints”.

We all know that stress can lead to sleep deprivation but not many of us realize the serious effects that it can have on our bodies. I’m sure many of us have heard coworkers boast about how little sleep they got the night before, pushing the limits of how much of this abuse your body can take has become an admirable trait in our society. Sleep deprivation can lead to blood pressure problems, diminished ability to focus, memory loss, depression, and a greatly compromised immune system. In more serious cases, reports the Washington Post, “insufficient or irregular sleep to increased risk for colon cancer, breast cancer, heart disease and diabetes”. In a recent study by Columbia University, the found that “adults who sleep the least appear to be the most likely to gain weight and to become obese”.

What can we gather from all these statistics? Saying “I’m too busy” or “I have too much work to do” are not logical excuses for ignoring your health. If you are not feeling at your best you are not going to do your best work, you will be much less efficient making tasks take twice as long as they should. If you just make a few simple changes you will be able to get everything accomplished that you want to in less time, and waste less time and money treating avoidable illnesses. If we stop trying to work in opposition with our bodies we will enhance our quality of life, move ourselves forward in our careers, and of course look better!

Many people roll their eyes at the prospect of living a more “yogic” or “holistic” lifestyle, feeling that it is a luxury reserved for bored housewives or those who live outside that hustle and bustle of the city. But this site features articles with a wealth of practical advice.

One of our favorite articles is Yoga Break, written by Greg Capitolo, he gives a few simple yoga moves that you can do at your desk whenever you are able to take a five minute break. Capitolo now works a hatha yoga teacher, but after working many years in corporate jobs in finance and IT he is well aware of the toll that sitting at as desk all day can take on your body. He also knows that you can’t always take an hour off to go to a yoga class during the day or break out a downward-dog in the middle of the office. But just by taking a few minutes to yourself like this during your day can refocus you and help fortify your mind so that you can deal with potentially stressful situations without becoming overwhelmed.

If you’re interested in more than just yoga and pilates check out Fit Bottomed Girls! The original team which was comprised of Jennipher Walters and Erin Whitehead has grown since the site has gained popularity, but they all pride themselves on being “real women” and not fitness magazine models. This site gives reviews on workout DVDs, fitness equipment, and even apparel. Another feature that we really like about this site is that they have a whole section dedicated to helping you stay fit while you travel. With her delectable low-cal versions of classic favorites, it is no wonder that readers have flocked to her. This blog offers a wealth of recipes so that your taste buds will never get bored during your pursuit for a healthier you. Another great site that she runs is Skinny Bits where you can learn about healthy give-aways and join discussions with the rest of the community about their weight management journeys.

#4 Alternative Medicine Zone

We are often hesitant when offered a holistic remedy for an ailment.  Reports come to mind of celebrities traveling to Tibet, hanging out with the Dalai Lama for six months to achieve eternal youth and inner peace. We remember horror stories we saw on the evening news detailing the fatal reactions that people have suffered from ingesting untested herbal supplements. Not to worry! Alternative medicine has come a long way in the western world! Alternative Medicine Zone is a great example of this progress.

This blog provides innumerable natural remedies for a variety of ailments. They are also very careful to educate their readers about the risks of using certain holistic treatments to prevent any adverse effects. We found this article about the dangers of unregulated herbal supplements to be very informative. One of the things we like about this blog is that the writers make this topic very approachable for the average woman. Also they don’t advocate forgoing modern medicine entirely, they just offer holistic medicine as a viable alternative. In this article in which they discuss the benefits and risks of holistic healing, they clearly state that “Some serious conditions may warrant immediate treatment by a physician in a conventional hospital or medical setting, prior to holistic examination.”

We believe that alternative medicine deserves some serious consideration based on the various studies about Americans’ abuse of over-the-counter medications such as painkillers. According to interviews that Northwestern University researchers conducted with their patients, “nearly 20 percent of respondents said they took painkillers every day or at least a few times a week. Forty-six percent of respondents admitted to combining multiple acetaminophen products.”

Americans take this behavior very lightly but what they don’t know is that it can (an often does) lead to very serious consequences. According to a study conducted published in Journal of General Internal Medicine, “overdoses of [acetaminophen] account for an overwhelming majority of the country’s acute liver failures”.

Armed with this knowledge, why wouldn’t you try a safer option rather than automatically reaching for the medicine cabinet? In Alternative Medicine Zone’s article Holistic Medicine More Than Autosuggestion, they prove that holistic healing really does work. In the article, a mother decided to use a natural remedy to treat her son’s gall bladder stones instead of putting him through a costly and invasive surgery. After a few (admittedly unpleasant) days, her son was gall bladder free. For all these reasons we think that it just makes sense for modern women to look past the pharmacy aisle once in a while to take care of their health!

We can’t talk about health without addressing one of the most important factors; your mental health. We all feel inundated with the torrent of demands in our lives sometimes. There is no shame in seeking help, occasionally you just need a fresh perspective to see the solutions in front of you. As we all know, the average American lifestyle is not very conducive to a creating a symbiotic relationship between humans and nature. Known for our our love of gas-guzzling hummers, exorbitant food portions (which leads to unprecedented waste), and our pursuit of “The American Dream” which includes a large house (with many more rooms than we could ever use) on a sprawling estate, we are unquestionably headed towards the ominous “tipping point” that many scientists have warned against.

Like us, they value quality products that will make your life run smoother as well as being attractive. Their Pintrest account, is a cornucopia of fabulous finds, we are especially infatuated with the vertical gardens that they posted (shown above).

We lost track of time clicking on the article topics at Life Edited! Just reading them made us feel more of a spiritual connection to our abodes. Articles found on Life Edited include such gems as: 8 Tips for Editing Your Life that Work for Any Budget, and 5 Shopping Tips for Buying Less Stuff. We never realized just how much more efficient and exquisite our homes could be, and they make it seem so easy to achieve!

Life Edited was started by Graham Hill who is also the founder of Tree Hugger. Hill is our hero! He is living proof that “going green” doesn’t mean you have to move to a commune and start making your own compost. He has dedicated his life to proving that you can live (and live well!) with much less then you think. Hill makes very compelling arguments as to how this lifestyle just makes more sense and is ultimately more conducive to residing comfortably in an urban environment. His 420-square-foot apartment, which he refers to as a “Multipurpose Laboratory” can be transformed into six different rooms! You can see the phenomenon unfold in this video.

What we love about Dwell is that their mission is to make modern interior design more approachable. Most interior design magazines are filled with pristine rooms devoid of any signs of life. While these rooms are attractive, they are also cold and intimidating. Dwell aims to prove that you can make your home as elegant as a showroom while actually being able to live in it. This philosophy coupled with the tips in the Going Green section makes this site a go-to for re-imagining your living space. We also found this inspiring article called Stow Aways about a couple who made their 650-square-foot Chelsea co op into a comfortable oasis optimizing every square inch of their home (pictures shown above).

Another great feature of this site is the Dwell Labs section in which readers submit their design challenges and the Dwell experts offer smart solutions. We like how interactive this makes the site and they solve such pressing issues as, how to organize all those unsightly cables in your home, stylish solutions for separating your recyclables, and clever alternatives to the traditional coat rack.

We are especially enamored with these chairs and ottomans we found that also double as bookshelves. They are so adorable and an ingenious alternative to some of the ungainly traditional bookshelves that take up  valuable space.
